Honoring the Patersons’ Legacy
The Basil and Portia Paterson Scholarship honors a lifelong partnership grounded in education, service and social justice. For more than six decades, Basil and Portia Paterson were partners in life and in their shared commitment to advancing opportunities for working people. This scholarship reflects their belief that those who dedicate their lives to caring for others deserve access to education, stability and the chance to build a better future.
About the Basil and Portia Paterson Scholarship for Home Care Workers
Why Your Contribution Matters
Home care workers are essential to the health and stability of New York City. Every day, they support older adults, people with disabilities and individuals managing chronic illness—allowing thousands of New Yorkers to remain in their homes, connected to their communities and out of institutional care. Their work sustains families, reduces strain on hospitals and long-term care facilities and is a critical part of the city’s healthcare infrastructure.
The scholarship makes it possible for those who care for our most vulnerable neighbors to invest in themselves, advance into higher-paying careers and continue contributing to their communities from positions of greater stability and opportunity—transforming those who care for our communities into the nurses, social workers and healthcare leaders we all depend on.
The Value of Your Contribution
Your contribution makes this transformation possible. You give home care workers the time, resources and support to pursue their dreams while managing demanding work and family responsibilities. Thank you for helping us give back to those who do so much for the ones we love.
